Man, 51, cited for animal cruelty

MARLBORO - A man from the Morganville section has been cited for animal cruelty after allegedly abandoning his family's pet rabbit in the woods behind his home. Jong Park, 51, of Fieldstone Drive, left the rabbit, named Hope, in the woods several weeks ago after the animal outgrew its cage, said Victor "Buddy" Amato, police chief of the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

"They said they wanted it to make new friends," Amato said. "The family didn't understand that this is a domesticated animal that can't survive on its own."

The rabbit was recovered three days ago and is regaining its health, Amato said.

Park was issued summonses for abandonment and failing to provide food, water or shelter to a pet. He could face up to $2,000 in fines when he appears in municipal court later this month.

Amato said it is important for people who buy young animals to educate themselves about proper long term care.

"People buy baby animals and then when they get big, they don't know what to do," he said.
