Howell man admits using antifreeze to keep neighbor's cats away

HOWELL - A township man pleaded guilty today to animal cruelty, admitted he placed containers of antifreeze on his lawn to try to deter his neighbor's cats from coming onto his property, authorities said.

Wesley Shourt, 45, of Mouse Creek Court, was ordered by Municipal Court Judge Allen S. Kaplan to pay a $1,000 fine, said Victor "Buddy" Amato, chief of the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Amato said Shourt was involved in a dispute with his neighbor over the cats defecating on the lawn, and he believed the antifreeze would keep the animals away from his yard.

He was charged on Jan. 11, and authorities believe he had been placing the antifreeze outside for about two weeks before he was issued the summons.

Authorities did not find any evidence that any animals were killed, Amato said.
