Pit bull found shows signs of being used as dog fight "bait"
OCEAN TOWNSHIP - Members of the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals rescued a pit bull that they believe had been used as a "bait" dog for dog fighting.
The dog, a 2-year-old black and white pit bull, was found roaming the streets near Hope Road and the Rolling Meadows development on Wednesday.
SPCA officials said they believe the dog, which they have named "Lazarus," was groomed to be a "bait" animal because his teeth were ground down and his face and body were bloody and scarred.
"Despite all this, all Lazarus wants to do is climb up on a warm lap and lick a face," the SPCA said in a news release.
Once the dog's wounds are healed, he will be put up for adoption.
Anyone with information about who is responsible for the dog's wounds is asked to call SPCA Chief Victor "Buddy" Amato at 732-312-7153.
SPCA officials said donations toward the dog's medical care would be appreciated. For more information, call 732-542-2030 or visit www.monmouthcountyspca.org.
