Keansburg man sentenced to 120 days for shooting neighbor's cat with air rifle
KEANSBURG - The man charged in the November shooting and death of his neighbor's cat has been sentenced to 120 days in the Monmouth County Jail, SPCA police chief Victor "Buddy" Amato said.
"He had no priors," Amato said. "Usually people with no priors think they will automatically get (pre trial intervention)."
Instead John Melendez, 46, of Carr Avenue, will not only serve out his entire sentence but is required by Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Richard W. English to serve three years probation, 60 days community service and enter into a long-term therapy program. He also must pay a $1,000 fine and $866 in restitution.
Amato said an investigation into Nov. 27 reporting of gunfire there, revealed the borough resident used a .22 caliber Gamo Whisper air rifle to shoot Sweety, his neighbors' pet.
He will not be permitted to have any contact with the victims or their family, Amato said.
