Man ordered to pay fine for abandoning ferret
KEANSBURG - A 20-year-old Keansburg man pleaded guilty in Keansburg municipal court today to abandoning a living creature for leaving his girlfriend's ferret on the side of the road in Hazlet last month, authorities said.
Anthony Cella of Carr Avenue, was ordered by Keansburg Municipal Court Judge Michael Pugliese to pay a $1,000 fine, said Monmouth County SPCA Chief Victor "Buddy" Amato.
Cella's girlfriend no longer wanted her pet ferret, so she made inquires at some local animal shelters, but was unwilling to pay the surrender fee, Amato said.
Then Cella told her he had found someone who wanted to buy the animal for $100, said Amato.
Instead, he said, Cella took the ferret and left it on Miriam Place in Hazlet on May 8.
A resident saw him unloading the cage, and called authorities. The SPCA now has possession of the animal, Amato said.
