Man given suspended jail sentence for slitting throat of girlfriend's ferret
NEPTUNE - A man accused of slitting the throat of his girlfriend's ferret during a domestic dispute was given a six-month suspended jail sentence by a municipal court judge Thursday.
Stephen Hetzel, 20, must also pay a $1,000 fine and submit to psychiatric evaluations during a year of supervised probation, said Victor "Buddy" Amato, chief of the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Hetzel pleaded guilty to a single count of animal cruelty and admitted in court that he cut his girlfriend's pet from ear-to-ear during a domestic dispute on May 3, Amato said. The ferret was returned to its owner after receiving treatment at Red Bank Animal Hospital.
