Spring Lake Heights pair fined $2,500 each for breeding dogs in fetid conditions

SPRING LAKE HEIGHTS - A mother-son duo who were nabbed breeding puppies in fetid conditions last month had their day in court Tuesday.

Muriel A. Ennis, 69, and her son Chad R. Ennis, 40, were each ordered to pay $2,500 restitution to the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and received lifetime bans of ever owning another animal from Municipal Court Judge George C. Pappas on Tuesday, according to MCSPCA Chief Law Enforcement Officer Victor "Buddy" Amato.

"No more animals, and no more breeding," Amato said in detailing the court proceedings.

"They have been very cooperative during the entire matter," Amato said about Muriel and Chad Ennis. "These are good people, they just got overwhelmed."

MCSPCA officials raided the Jersey Avenue 800-square-foot home on Dec. 13 after being tipped off to the situation by neighbors and removed 29 Labrador Retriever puppies and a pair of whelping mothers setting off a scramble by area residents hoping to adopt the puppies in the days leading up to the gift-giving holidays of Hanukah and Christmas.

Over the next two weeks, the remaining dogs were removed from the home until the last 14 dogs were taken out on Dec. 27, Amato explained. In all, 64 dogs were removed from the property.

About 30 adult dogs remain at the SPCA's shelter in Eatontown facility available for adoption, Amato said.

None of the animals had to be put down, he said.

All 64 dogs received veterinary care, with many of the dogs suffering some kind of health problem because of the inbreeding that took place, while others were treated for mange, worms, spayed, or neutered, Amato explained
