Tinton Falls man charged with depriving dog of food and water

A Tinton Falls man has been charged with animal cruelty for housing a dog in a pen in the woods without food or water, officials said.

Rh Thomas, 29, of Cheyenne Street, Tinton Falls, was charged today with two counts of animal cruelty.

Pit pulls were being housed in the woods at the end of Colts Neck Road in Howell, said Victor "Buddy" Amato, the police chief of the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

He said a large male pit bull, owned by Thomas, escaped from the pen and went after military police officers and animal control officers in the area Monday.

Amato said he was called to the scene, and determined there was no food or water in the dog's pen area.

After further investigation, he determined the dog had been without food and water since Saturday, he said.

The Associated Humane Society also charged Thomas with violating municipal ordinances by allowing the dog to run at large and by having a potentially dangerous dog, Amato said.

The pit bull was taken to the humane society's headquarters in Tinton Falls.
