Neptune man pleads guilty to animal cruelty charges
NEPTUNE - A township man pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges Friday, police reported today.
Ralph R. Cavalieri, 56, of Corlies Avenue admitted to illegally keeping two bearded dragons and a large snapping turtle at his home in unsanitary conditions.
"You couldn't see the turtle in its tank," said Victor "Buddy" Amato, chief of the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. "The conditions were disgusting."
The dragons were almost dead, Amato said. They were sent to an animal rehab. Amato released the turtle into the wild.
Cavalieri paid a $500 fine and the animals were confiscated. Furthermore, Cavalieri faces state charges because he did not have an exotic animals permit.
