Howell man pleads guilty to animal cruelty

HOWELL - After three prior postponements, a township man pleaded guilty in Municipal Court Wednesday night minutes before his trial was to start. Jeffrey L. Madole, 47, now a Pennsylvania resident, was fined $250 after he told Municipal Court Judge Allen S. Kaplan he had failed to get veterinary care for an injured dog he was boarding at the True Companions Boarding Kennel he had run. The kennel has since closed, officials said.

The charge was filed on June 19, 2008, according to a summons written by Sgt. Matthew Giuliano of the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Twice the case had been set for trials that were ultimately postponed, officials said. The case centered on a leg injury suffered by a dog that had been boarded at the kennel for eight months in 2007 and 2008, Giuliano said. The dog's owner had to spend more than $5,000 to have the animal's leg fixed, Giuliano said.

The investigation determined the dog had suffered the leg injury months before it was returned to its owner, said Victor ""Buddy" Amato, the chief humane enforcement officer for the Monmouth SPCA. "This case was about the obligation to get treatment for a dog that was entrusted to his care," Amato said. "That wasn't done." p. 1/1
