Holmdel man convicted of animal cruelty after leaving dog in park
HOLMDEL - A 26-year-old man was convicted of animal cruelty charges that carries a $2,000 fine for abandoning his sister's dog at Holmdel Park in temperatures below 20 degrees, officials said.
Thomas Curran of Holmdel was convicted on four counts of animal cruelty after leaving his 3-year-old long-haired Chihuahua at the park Dec. 17, said Victor "Buddy" Amato, chief humane law enforcement officer for the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Eatontown.
Curran plead guilty to two of the four charges in front of Holmdel Municipal Court Judge Mary Casey on Wednesday. The two other charges were dropped, Amato said.
Amato said Curran abandoned the dog after having an argument with his sister the previous night.
Amato said he had received a telephone call from Edward Dobrosky, a township park ranger who said he had sighted the dog running through the park unattended. Dobrosky eventually rescued the dog that had fallen into the pond.
Dobrosky brought the dog to the SPCA, where it was treated for hypothermia, Amato said. The court awarded custody of the dog to the SPCA. Dobrosky then adopted it from the SPCA and renamed it Lucky.
"The ranger had fallen in love with the dog because he had saved it," Amato said.
Township police Officer Charles Groder also assisted in the investigation.
