Asbury Park man charged after striking, killing 2 Shih Tzus with vehicle
ASBURY PARK - A city man is charged with driving away after hitting and killing a pair of dogs that escaped from a Langford Street yard.
Marshall Randolph Jr., 59, of Second Avenue in the city, was driving a four-door Dodge Intrepid when he struck and killed a pair of Shih Tzu dogs, Prince and Princess, after the animals escaped from the property of their owner, Eleen M. Ortega, around 8:30 a.m. on July 14, according to Victor "Buddy" Amato, chief law enforcement officer for the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Ortega was calling out to the two dogs when they were struck and killed in the 1000 block of Monroe Avenue, Amato said.
Witnesses told investigators the vehicle slowed after striking the two dogs but someone inside that vehicle was heard saying, "Go, Go, Go" before driving away from the scene, Amato explained.
An investigation by SPCA Sgt. William Hyer tracked down Randolph and his wife who was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the incident, culminating with charges of animal cruelty and failure to report a motor vehicle accident, Amato said.
Randolph faces up to six months in jail on each of the charges, $2,000 in fines and restitution, Amato said.
Randolph is scheduled to appear in municipal court on August 19.
