It takes kindness of strangers to help animals in need

I was recently reading your story about the tortoises, "Huge tortoises seized from Highlands home, taken to zoo" (Sept. 13) and had to write.

It is sad what people do to all kinds of animals. The owner had good intentions, but the living conditions were deplorable. Thanks to the neighbor who went to investigate the noise and to Victor "Buddy" Amato, chief law enforcement officer for the county SPCA, and the Popcorn Zoo.

A friend of mine was at a red light on Route 530 in Whiting and saw something on the side of the road; it was a box turtle. He pulled off to the side of the road and took the turtle to Harry Wright Lake, and he let it go. It takes the kindness of strangers to help helpless animals.
