Neptune man charged with neglecting pet lizards, turtle

A Corlies Avenue man was cited for eight counts of animal cruelty Thursday after an SPCA investigator found three exotic pets living in squalid conditions.

Ralph R. Cavalieri, 55, was cited by SPCA Sgt. Matty Giuliiano after police received complaints about three reptiles not receiving adequate care, SPCA Chief Victor "Buddy" Amato said.

Cavalieri kept two large bearded dragon lizards as pets as well as an alligator snapping turtle, an animal Amato said is not permitted as a pet in New Jersey without an exotic pet license, which Cavalieri did not have.

Tanks for the animals were too small and there were no heat lamps for the dragons, one of which is likely to die, Amato said.

Cavalieri is due to appear in municipal court April 30.
