Man who left pups in van convicted of animal cruelty
TINTON FALLS - A New York man was convicted of animal cruelty on Tuesday after being arrested last month for leaving puppies for days in an unheated van in temperatures below freezing, authorities said.
John Steid, 62, of Mexico, N.Y., pleaded guilty in municipal court before Judge Richard B. Thompson. Steid was fined $5,000 and was ordered not to sell dogs or house dogs in a motor vehicle and to obtain the proper health certificates from a licensed vet before sale, said Victor "Buddy" Amato, chief law enforcement officer for the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Fifteen puppies - half Golden Retrievers, half Siberian Huskies, all pure-bred - were discovered unattended by a worker from the Red Roof Inn hotel on Hope Road where they had been left in a white panel van that had been parked for two nights, Amato said.
The two- to three-month-old dogs were held in the van in metal cages, unable to huddle for warmth.
"It was like sitting on ice, for two days," Amato said.
The dogs, which also suffered from parasites, are receiving medial care from the county SPCA and they will be ready for adoption in about a week, Amato said.
