Pest control business owner pleads guilty to animal cruelty

HAZLET - The owner of a local pest control company charged with four counts of animal cruelty in May was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine in municipal court today, according to the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Katherine Buck, owner of Critter Ridder, pleaded guilty to one count of animal cruelty, said SPCA Chief Victor "Buddy" Amato. Her company had been hired by the owners of a professional complex to get rid of a squirrel, Amato said, but failed to check on a trap for a period of more than 24 hours.

SPCA officers later found a squirrel in the trap "cooked to death," Amato said.
