Woman sought in puppy case
A judge on Tuesday issued a bench warrant for a New York woman who failed to appear in Municipal Court to answer allegations that she sold sick dogs to unsuspecting customers.
The judge issued the warrant for Lynn Overy, 47, of Mexico, N.Y., said Victor "Buddy" Amato, the police chief of the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Overy is charged with 14 counts of animal cruelty for selling sick dogs, he said. She has been served with the complaints, but failed to appear in Freehold Township Municipal Court Tuesday, he said.
She operated a Freehold Township-based business with John Steib, 61, of Cicero, N.Y., who has been charged with 21 counts of animal cruelty, said Amato.
The company, Northern Lights Siberians, sold puppies, mostly golden retrievers and Siberian huskies, from its Bernice Drive location, Amato said.
Authorities received complaints from people who purchased sick animals from the business, he said.
If a veterinarian deems a dog unfit for sale within 14 days of the purchase, the seller must pay for the dog's veterinary care, give the buyer a new dog of equal value or provide a refund. But Steib and Overy did not comply with that rule, Amato said.
Anyone else who may have purchased a sick dog from the company is asked to call Amato at (732) 312-7153. All information will be kept confidential, he said.
