Keansburg man cited for leaving pet ferret on the side of the road
A ferret left on the side of the road Friday night was abandoned after it's owner was unwilling to pay an adoption fee to local shelters, the head of the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said today.
The animal was found off Miriam Place by a resident who allegedly saw a man pull over in his car and hastily unload a cage, Monmouth County SPCA Chief Victor "Buddy" Amato said.
Today, Amato cited Anthony Cella, 20, of Keansburg with a single count of abandonment and a charge of failing to provide water for a pet after investigators tracked the ferret to Cella's girlfriend.
The girlfriend, who was not charged, had called two local animal shelters recently
looking to relinquish ownership of the ferret but was unwilling or unable to pay adoption fees, Amato said.
Cella allegedly told his girlfriend that he found a woman in Keansburg willing to pay
$100 for the ferret and had asked him to leave the animal unattended on Miriam Place, Amato said.
Authorities do not believe any such arrangement was ever made, Amato said.
