Manasquan man accused of fatally shooting Canada goose

MANASQUAN - A Perrine Boulevard man has been cited for animal cruelty after allegedly killing a Canada goose with a pellet gun Monday night.

David J. Martens, 65, told authorities he was frustrated with the animal for defecating on his deck so he fired two shots to scare the bird, said Victor "Buddy" Amato, chief of the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. At least one of the shots hit the bird in a vital area and caused a fatal wound, Amato said.

Police were called to Martens' waterfront home at about 6:45 p.m. after neighbors reported hearing two shots and seeing the goose flopping on the deck and rolling into the water, Amato said.

During a subsequent investigation, Martens admitting to killing the goose, Amato said.

He is charged with a single count of animal cruelty and is scheduled to appear in Municipal Court on July 8.
