Dog cruelty suspect indicted
UNION BEACH: A Superior Court grand jury sitting in Monmouth County indicted a Scranton, Pa., woman on Wednesday on charges of animal cruelty and possession of an illegal weapon.
Michelle Milford, 35, is accused of slitting the throat of a 2 1/2-year-old Jack Russell terrier named Penelope.
Victor "Buddy" Amato, chief law enforcement officer for the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said Milford was visiting someone in Union Beach at the time of the incident on Jan. 24.
"She (Milford) slit the dog's throat twice, in front of witnesses," he said.
SPCA officers rushed the dog to the Red Bank Veterinary Animal Hospital. Penelope survived the attack and is back with its owner.
After the incident, Milford was transported to the Monmouth County Jail in Freehold Township with bail set at $10,000. She made bail a few days later, Amato said, and faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
