18-year-old charged with killing a kitten by smashing the animal against a wall
EATONTOWN - An 18-year-old male is in the county jail tonight after authorities arrested and charged him with maliciously killing an 8-week-old kitten.
At about 3 a.m., Rodney D. Shivers of Linden was at the Pan Am American Motel in Eatontown on Route 35, said Victor Amato, police chief for Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Amato said witnesses reportedly saw Shivers at that time smash a kitten against a wall at the motel, killing the animal.
The kitten, named Pooter, did not belong to Shivers, said Amato, and was taken to Red Bank Animal Hospital, where a necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
Shivers is charged with two counts of needlessly killing a living creature, Amato said, and faces a possible sentence of up to five years in jail, and up to $2,000 in fines, plus all medical costs.
Shivers is in the Monmouth County Correctional Facility in Freehold, with bail set at $10,000, and no 10 percent.
