Middletown man admits to stabbing dog with broken broom handle

MIDDLETOWN - Two township residents pleaded guilty to animal abuse charges in separate municipal court cases today.

Frank Sabini, 67, was ordered to pay $1,200 in veterinary bills after he told Municipal Court Judge Michael D. Pugliese that he was guilty of stabbing a dog with a broken broom handle on Aug. 31. The dog was taken to an animal hospital near death, but has since recovered, said Victor "Buddy" Amato, chief of police for the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

In another matter, Yolanda Whitley of Belford was fined $250 for keeping a pit bull terrier chained all night to a corner pole on Sept. 7. Pugliese also ordered the dog to be turned over the Monmouth SPCA. The animal was immediately adopted, Amato said.

"We had been holding the dog until we knew what the judge would decide," he added. "We had someone who had been waiting to adopt the animal, but we couldn't release the dog until the court made its decision."
