Two area men plead guilty to animal cruelty
A man who dropped his dogs off at a Wall boarding facility and never returned to pick them up has been fined $1,500.
Glenn Erlenmeyer, 25, entered a guilty plea in Municipal Court Tuesday after the owners of Purr & Pooch filed a complaint with the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals stating he never returned to pick up two dogs he dropped off in August, said SPCA Chief Victor "Buddy" Amato.
Additionally, authorities confiscated a third dog from Erlenmeyer's Waretown home when he was arrested in September on the strength of three outstanding warrants, Amato said.
Also on Tuesday, a West Long Branch man was fined $500 in Ocean Township after admitting that he fired a pellet gun at groundhogs in his backyard, Amato said.
Donald Tietjen, 56, told authorities in October the groundhogs posed a threat to his dogs and children. SPCA officials, however, filed animal cruelty charges against him for firing the pellet gun instead of calling a pest removal company, Amato said.
