Dojo Pix > Kick Boxing Class
Scenes from our Adult Kick Boxing Class
Our Adult Kick Boxing class takes place on Wednesdays from
8 to 9:15pm. It's a dynamic class that consists of first warmups,
drills, and then kick-boxing opportunities in our ring.
Everyone is invited! Karate is not a requirement, although
most of our participants study that as well. Intense kick boxing
requires sparring gear (available in our store).
Class begins with a series of stretches to warm up
cold muscles. Below, Sensei Jerry is leading the class
in the split. Notice how the student is able to achieve
almost a 180 angle; this comes with practice.
After warmups are done (7 or so different stretches), class starts with
kick-boxing drills. Below, the instructor is showing the student
how to throw an upper cut punch to his hands.
Our drills are comprehensive, to say the least! Kick-boxing isn't just
about, well, kicking and boxing...it also incorporates the ability to
move about fluidly on the feet. Below, the student just crouched down
to miss the swing by the teacher. Notice how both hands are still
held up to protect the upper body/face, and the back is straight (one of the
most un-wise things a person can do in a bout is lean forward with
the head down - it's easy to be knocked off balance that way).
Other similar drills have the sensei using hand pads. Below,
Sensei Jerry is swinging at head level while the student crouches
to avoid the blow. Notice the bent knees; this is critical for
speed.
Remember how I had mentioned students keep their hands up
to protect their face? We also conduct drills where that simply
HAS to happen. How? By having the students hold an 8 pound
medicine ball during the drills, of course - you can see that
below.
Students will often be paired off during drills.
Below the students have switched who is holding
the shield, and who is holding the medicine ball
and kicking.
Another drill utilized is practicing punching hard and then
immediately following up with a round house kick. Below,
notice the hands are *still* protecting the face. Good job!
Once drills are completed, the actual kick-boxing commences.
First, the students have to "gear up" - that means put on their
protective sparring gear. If they don't have any, they'll go up
as the aggressor against one of the senseis who lets them practice
their moves.
Gear consists of shinguards, feet guards, gloves, a chest
protector, a helmet and a mouthpiece.
Below you can see the beginnings of one bout. Notice
how both participants have bent knees for weaving about.
Another shot of the same fight. See how some face protectors
are of clear plastic, while others have bars in front.
Crouching and then straighening up quickly helps students
get inside a guard. Below, one student is about to do that.
And like with every one of our other classes, students who
excel will be asked to join our demo team. Below, see
the performance from our Hazlet Community Day participation.
Adult kick-boxing is growing in popularity.
