Dojo Pix > Kids Karate Kata Class
Scenes from our Kids Karate Kata Class
Our Kids Karate Kata class takes place on Saturdays from:
- 10 to 11am (Beginners Kata)
- 11 to 12pm (Advanced Kata)
- 2 to 3pm (Black Belt/Brown Belt Kata)
Now, "karate katas" are stylized fighting forms in which
students execute a series of precise movements in order
to fend off various attacks. I cannot begin to emphasize
their importance in a well-rounded Martial Arts education;
continued practice enhances form, builds muscle memory, and
aids the student to progress ever further and farther in
Goju-Ryu Karate.
Depending upon the size of the class, students will be
broken up into two rooms - one for true beginners and
the other for those who have mastered the first few katas.
Beginners karate students learn the 3 I-katas (called so because
the pattern is a captial "I".
Emphasis is placed on stances,
downward blocks and the chambering of the hands. Below,
you can see Sensei Tom
showing students the proper way to slide forward the foot
when executing a "C step" motion.
Just like in all of our other martial arts classes,
our senseis take the time to walk around individually to
each student and offer suggestions/corrections to their
movements. Below, the black belt leading the class has
paused so Sensei Tom can check the beginners
class' front stances.
When a student knows how to perform the 3 I-katas with no
guidance, they're generally moved to the next group (often in
the Blue Room). Here, Sensei
Mat II is starting the entire class in the I-kata.
As earlier mentioned, stances and forms are very important in
kata. Below, you can see the class in mid-kata as they throw
a reverse punch. Notice most of the class has the front knee
bent.
Advanced Katas include the Sanchin, Saifa, Saiuchin, Seisan and
other katas. Now, as katas progress, the movements and stances
become increasingly more challenging and precise. Below, Sensei
Tom is showing the Sanchin stance from the Hangetsu Kata. Notice two things -
one, his knees are bent towards each other and feet are pointing
to the same spot in front, and two, the tension in his left arm.
This particular kata depends upon a high level of muscular tension
and deliberate movements - it takes a lot of time to perfect.
You've probably seen a front reverse punch, right? Well, what
does such a thing look like if you've tensed your muscles and
imparted an explosive force to your movement? Below you can see -
also part of the Sanchin Kata, Sensei Tom's arm is extended with
incredible control and tension. Notice the other arm is chambered
high....and the orange belt student is following along.
Unique stances aren't limited only to what you've seen above.
Below, notice how the students are pointing their feet so their
toes reflect a right angle.
Like the beginners Karate Kata class, the Advanced Karate Kata
class also wil be broken down into two different rooms. Below,
the more advanced students are performing the opening bow of
the Naihanchi Kata....
Which also includes a very nice hook punch.
Below you can see the cat stance that is part of the Hangetsu Kata....
As well as the modified
backfist delivered to the bridge of the nose strike.
Finally, as with all of our other Karate weapons classes,
superb students will be asked to perform in our Demonstration
Team! Below, you can see the advanced kids...
and Sensei Mat II with Sensei Jim perform their Karate Katas with
precision and skill.
Mastering karate katas are part of the requirements
of earning a Black Belt at Amato's Goju-ryu.
Remember,
all of our kata classes are included in our tuition! You
