Dojo Pix > Nunchaku Class
Scenes from our Nunchaku Class
Our Nunchaku class takes place on Thursdays from
6 to 6:45pm. Students start with one nunchaku, and
then graduate to using two in katas and forms.
When new students arrive, they are given personal
training, often one-on-one. This individualized
attention really helps set the pace for future
learning. Here, our sensei is showing a new student
the proper way to swing a nunchaku over the shoulder.
Notice the hand grip - often it is close to
the top of the nunchaku (you get much better control
that way. 'course, other techniques take advantage of
other grips).
After the first few lessons, the new student will join the
rest of the class in kata and forms practice. Often we
break our classes into Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced -
this means students will always be able to learn new techniques
at their level. Here, you can see Sensei Tom running the class
through kata practice.
Katas (karate forms) are one of the most important aspects of
a solid Martial Arts training. Beginners learn three nunchaku
katas (called the "I-katas"). Here, you can see a selection
from the first I-kata. Great attention is paid to form -
notice the deep front stances, the straight backs and the like.
Once the three I-katas are mastered, students are allowed to
practice with two nunchakus (otherwise known as "double chucks").
We have several double-chuck katas we teach to our students. Here,
you can see a break-out class in the Blue Room where students are
getting comfortable with using 2 nunchaku at the same time.
While nunchaku katas and forms are of deep importance, we also
try to teach some practical applications of the art. Here, Sensei
Tom is teaching how to strike with the right hand while maintaining
tight control with the left.
And speaking of practical applications, it's always fun to
imagine, "What if"? What if you needed to deal with someone
who had a different weapon and was less friendly than
someone who missed their morning cup of coffee?
While we teach avoidance at all cost, we also show how students
can leverage the abilities of their nunchaku to help defend themselves
if all else fails. Here, our students are learning these techniques.
Finally, one of the truly memorable experiences students can
have with the Nunchaku class is when they qualify for the dynamic
Nunchaku Demonstration Team. This team performs at community
events such as Hazlet Community Day and Keansburg Day. The
team practices every month during the year, and every week
prior to demos.
Nun-chaku is great fun and very enjoyable to practice.
Students who excel are asked to join in our demostration
team! Remember,
all of our weapons instructional classes are included in our tuition! You
can learn more about what we offer at our
Schedule page.
Please continue to enjoy your visit!
