Dojo Pix > Wrestling Class
Scenes from our Wrestling Class
Our Wrestling class takes place on Fridays from
7pm to 8pm (right after our Kids
Aikido class), and again on Sunday from 11am to 12:30pm.
We have students from various schools in Monmouth counties
participating.
Prior to starting up the actual practice, students have
to warm up via several different activities. First off
is slow jogging then picking up speed around the wrestling
mat.
Next, there are many different moves one can throw in
wrestling from both a standing and grappling position.
Below, you can see the students as they move back and
forth across the mat, throwing themselves down and then
quickly picking themselves up and moving forward.
After 6 or 7 more exercises, basics are gone over and the class will
pair up to practice general moves. Below, you can see various
stages of the take-down.
One of the most important aspects of a quality wrestling class,
of course, is detailed demonstrations of every movement in a
wrestling match...and what separates the winners from the losers.
Below, our instructor is preparing to grapple with the student;
notice how eye-contact is emphasized and maintained.
Every movement can be the difference between an eventual win or a crushing loss.
Below, our instructor is demonstrating
how to lock the head close to the body while grabbing the
other arm of the opponent in preparation for...
the take-down. Notice here that the instructor has grasped
ABOVE the elbow (more leverage this way) while with the other
hand, has ensured the opponent's head is moving in the direction
he wants.
One student didn't quite catch how the instructor managed that grab
before, so below you can see him taking the time to re-do the movement
at a very slow speed.
Once you have your opponent on the ground, immobilization is a good thing!
There are several ways you can utilize leverage to ensure your opponent
doesn't move; below you can see the instructor using leverage to lock
the opponent's head, upper thigh, and left arm.
Students can expect to participate in several bouts, and have
to take down opponents in many different positions. Here's
where the dojo's mirrors really come in handy - students
can look at the instructor's techniques and then check out
the hidden view in the mirror. This makes it easy to visually
examine all the different aspects of various techniques.
Once advanced instruction is completed, the students again
will pair off. Below, you can see two students testing each
other for the takedown...
Here's another 2 students who took each other down and are
now competing for the master hold....
And here's one student who is trying to break out
of a rather effective hold.
Class just about done, the students relax...while
the instructor mentally goes over what was achieved,
and plans for the next class.
Wrestling can be a very effective way for students to
learn take-downs and grappling.
Wrestling is an additional class at the dojo; you
can learn more about what we offer at our
Schedule page.
