Don't use your car as a microwave

Many people, this time of year, get a major case of the "Duhs".

They forget that their pets are not stuffed toys, and they breath air just as they do.

You can not leave your pet in your car while you have lunch or your facial hair waxed. this month alone, I have written at least three tickets to people that just don't get it. On top of that, I have had a least four phone calls from police departments in reference to complaints that they have signed, because people have left their pets in the car while they went shopping, or just used the car as a dog house while they watched their favorite "Dope Opera".

It is against the law to leave your pet in the car while you go shopping, or while you have your brain tuned, or for any reason what so ever.

Your car becomes an oven, in about 20 minutes, in even the mildest of temperatures during the summer. On days when it's over 85 degrees, it takes only 10 minutes before an animal goes into distress because of the heat. Smoe animals can go into heat stroke very quickly, just like humans, depending on underlining conditions, such as their body weight, their age, the type of dog and weather or not you have had the decency to leave water, and crack the windows down low enough so that a decent flow of air can get in. But remember, even if you leave the windows down, if it is hot out, it does not matter because the car becomes an oven, and you will receive a citation for it.

Just last week, I received a call from the Cosco shopping center in Hazlet, that someone left their basset hound and long hair daschund in the car. To top it all off, the windows were completely rolled up!. When the two brain scientists came out, it was determined that they were having lunch and lost track of time.

these people no doubt care and love their animals, it's just that people can and do get a case of the "Duhs". When these people were questioned, they were both obviously upset. they both realized they were just plain and simply wrong. Hopefully, they will never do it again, especially when they see what the fines are going to be.

What people should do, to realize how fast a car can heat up, if they think we are exaggerating this problem, is go into their car while it is over 80 degrees outside, park it in a lot out of the shade and turn it off. While you sit there, with the windows rolled up, sweating your brains out, see how long it takes before you reach for the know of the air conditioner.

You have to remember, we have he ability to understand temperature changes and why it happens and we know we can end the situation simply by turning the air up. An animal, on top of the fact that it is at the mercy of the person who just is not thinking, can not reason and goes into a panic when it realizes the heat is out of control

It is just common sense and we, as pet owners and responsible human beings, must step up to the plate if we wnt to own and take responsibility for another living creature.

A lot of times, people tell me that they bring their pets in the car with them because they do not have the heart to leave them at home. To this I say, do your pets a favor, leave them at home. They would rather be left alone and home and sit in an air conditioned house or at the very least, a house that is at least breathable than be broiled alive in the "beamer" or the Cadilliac Seville, while you, as I said before, have your facial hair waxed or shop for your pool party.

If the option of leaving your dog alone at home is not going to work, because the animal destroys the house when left alone, consider buying a large animal crate. This works well when the dog is left unattended, but even this method of training should only be used for a couple of hours at a time.

If the dog will be outside for a while, an enclosed dog run is another good idea. Make sure the runs has more than enough water and dry food as not at attract flies. The run should be cleaned every time your uses it, this will also lower the amount of flies in the area.

If none of my suggestions seem like a good idea, then give your dog up for adoption, your don't deserve to have it. A rock, in your case, would do just fine as a pet.
