The Chesapeake Bay Retriever
    by BUDDY AMATO

The Chesapeake Bay retriever is a breed that originates from the United States and date backs to the 1990s. Its roots, however, can be traced back to the water dogs of Newfoundland and also the English and Irish water spaniels.
The bay retriever shares many characteristics with the English Labrador retrievers. The bay retriever looks very much like the English lab, except for its curly, wavy hair. Both dogs come in shades of brown, red, and straw colors. The ears of the bay retriever are small and are set high up on the head and hang loosely. The skull is broad, like the English lab, and is covered in short hair.
The bay retriever is a great swimmer and is known for its powerful legs, which like the lab, make it an excellent candidate for water related sports. It was originally used for hunting and fishing related activities, such as retrieving ducks and other game birds.
The life expectancy of the bay retriever is up to 12 or 13 years of age. They can weigh from 55 to 80 pounds, depending on whether or not it is a male or female. The Chesapeake Bay retriever’s disposition is similar to the English lab as they make for great companion dogs and are very good with young children.
